Turtles All the Way Down

I keep saying, “It can’t be turtles all the way down” recently with increasing frequency. I think it’s quite funny, but what strikes me about it is at one point it was a striking claim.

So it makes me laugh and feel uncomfortable when I see an analog of this sort of argument taken seriously.

This is the equivalent of saying, “Sure it is turtles, the concern about the lack of turtles was silly, however we should gain some insight from those turtle skeptics.  But don’t worry: Even if it’s a soft-shelled turtle, we can stand on it.”

Amazing that she concludes with the radical realization that memory is constructed via perspective. I really thought historians that thought history was more like physics than poetry were all dead.
